Through working with some of the world’s finest Marine Scientists, we’ve been able to absorb quite a lot of insight and understanding. We know one end of a seacumber from the other, and can even pronounce Xooxanthallae in both English and Australian!
In practice, this means that a scientist can throw a big stack of paper in our direction, and we can understand it, distil the key concepts, and turn them into a bullet list or a script or a storyboard, as required.
This can be challenging process, as Scientists are generally focussed on accuarcy and are, therefore, reluctant to simplify issues. Laypeople, on the other hand, can easily be overwhelmed with detail and, therefore, a careful balance needs to be struck.
Our visual concept and script development for the Great Barrier Reef climate change animations – aimed at children – are a good example of how we can communicate the essential ideas in a simple and engaging way.
