SOPA is a bill being considered by US congress that will effectively allow corporations to censor internet content, placing the burden of proof on the content uploader.
This means you could to jail for 5 years for uploading a video to youtube of yourself singing a song. It also means that ANY website’s domain could be taken down – purely on suspicion of some sort of copyright violation.
This bill, with its potential for rampant abuse by any organisation with a well-funded legal team is probably the biggest threat to the free exchange of information and ideas that the internet has ever faced. You won’t be surprised to hear that Rupert Murdoch supports the bill.
