Sustainable Development Commission Axed

Despite issuing a report this week detailing how its work has saved the UK Government £60-70 million per year at a cost of just £3 million, funding for the organisation has been axed.

Part of the rationalisation is that sustainable approaches should be absorbed into everyday government work, not advised upon by an external body. Sounds nice. Sounds very, very optimistic, too. It’s a bit like saying that a good diet and regular excercise will help you stay healthy – therefore we don’t really need GPs.

Would it be overly cynical to suggest that the SDC’s unflattering reports on the costs and benefits of Nuclear Power have left a bad taste in ministerial mouths?

Or perhaps ‘The Greenest Government Ever’ (their words) considers Sustainability.. erm.. unsustainable.
